Guwahati logs record April downpour; heavy rain spell to persist across Assam

Must read

Guwahati, April 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday reported that Guwahati received 117.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, the highest ever recorded for a single day in April since 1951.

The latest figure breaks the previous record of 116.5 mm set in 2004, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing pre-monsoon weather activity in the region.

The downpour is part of a wider spell of heavy rainfall across Assam. Data from April 20 shows significant precipitation at multiple locations in and around Guwahati, including 126.5 mm at Guwahati (City) ARG, 119.5 mm at AAU-HRS, 134 mm at Gauhati University, and 215.9 mm at SIRD Complex, Khanapara, pointing to widespread and intense rainfall.

The IMD has forecast that inclement weather will continue over Assam for the next 2–3 days, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in several parts of the state. The current conditions are being driven by active weather systems, including upper air circulations over northeast Assam and adjoining areas.

In its latest report, the IMD noted that light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places, while heavy to very heavy rain was recorded at isolated locations in the past 24 hours. The forecast also warns of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph in some areas.

The prevailing weather pattern indicates that intense rainfall activity is likely to continue across Assam in the coming days.

In Guwahati, persistent rainfall is expected to aggravate waterlogging, disrupt vehicular movement, and raise the risk of tree falls and localized landslides, particularly in low-lying and hillside areas. Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, with emergency response systems kept on alert.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has urged residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions. Commuters and travellers have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rain and plan their schedules accordingly.

People living in vulnerable areas have been asked to stay alert for signs of flooding or landslides and to follow official advisories. ASDMA said the situation will be continuously monitored, with updates issued from time to time.
