Shillong, Feb 5: Employees of the GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (GVK EMRI) have demanded all 60 MLAs to oppose the state government’s decision to continue privatizing the emergency services in the state.

Under the banner of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers’ Union (MEMRIWU), the 108 ambulance workers also reiterated their demand for termination of the contract with the GVK EMRI company, which will expire in March.

Addressing a news conference, the president of the union, Microlina Syiemlieh said that all the 60 legislators demanded to oppose the decision to continue privatizing the emergency services in the state.

“We appeal to all of them to also take up the matter in the state Assembly that it is high time for the state government to take over the emergency services,” she said.

“If police and fire services are under the state government, then why not an emergency which is related to medical and health being of the citizens,” she asked.

Syiemlieh said the union also demanded that the state government immediately terminate the contract with the GVK EMRI.
