Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA is set to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term, with the alliance comfortably crossing the majority mark.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma registered a decisive victory from the Jalukbari constituency and described the outcome as a “hat-trick with a century,” signalling both his personal win and the alliance’s strong statewide performance.
Celebrations broke out at Bajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, where party workers gathered in large numbers, waving flags and raising slogans as the scale of the victory became clear.
Party sources said preparations are already underway for the swearing-in ceremony, likely to be held on May 8. Senior BJP leaders are also expected to meet the Governor later in the day to stake a claim to form the next government.
Reacting to the mandate, Sarma said the victory reflects the people’s continued trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA’s governance over the past decade. He described the result as an endorsement of development, women’s empowerment, and the vision of a “Viksit Assam.”
The Chief Minister also credited the efforts of party workers and leaders, including state BJP president Nitin Nabin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, for mobilising support across the state.
National leaders echoed similar sentiments. Modi congratulated party workers for their “round-the-clock efforts,” while Shah termed the outcome a “historic hat-trick mandate” and a reflection of the NDA government’s work towards a secure and progressive Assam.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed the result a “historic mandate,” thanking the people of Assam for blessing the BJP-led NDA with a third term. He said Modi’s leadership has transformed Assam and the Northeast from a region of neglect into one of “peace and prosperity,” and credited Shah’s role in steering the state away from years of insurgency and instability.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma congratulated Sarma for his party’s “outstanding performance” and for once again earning the trust of the people of Assam. He also extended congratulations to Shah and the BJP for securing a strong endorsement of their development agenda in the region.
Political observers note that the scale of the mandate—cutting across regions from Barak Valley to Upper and Lower Assam—highlights broad-based support for the BJP’s development narrative and identity politics.
