Gangtok, June 11: Sikkim is grappling with severe disruptions to road connectivity as relentless heavy rains have triggered flash floods and landslides, causing widespread damage and chaos across the region.
According to reports, a crucial stretch of National Highway 10 at Singtam in Sikkim is currently blocked at Shantinagar due to heavy rain and debris accumulation.
The torrential downpour led to the destruction of at least eight houses in Majuwa village, located in Yangang under South Sikkim.
“Communication networks have been significantly disrupted by the adverse weather conditions, prompting the closure of roads in the southern parts of the state as a precautionary measure,” said an official.
The heavy rainfall has severely impacted Sisnay and Namphok under the South District, and a disastrous landslide at Majhuwa under Yangang Sub-Division, South District, has resulted in devastating losses for local farmers.
According to reports, more than 12 dairy cows have died, while many others are under treatment, as confirmed by the Veterinary Officer in Yangang.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 101.6 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours in Sikkim, leading to numerous roadblocks and disruptions across the state.
