Shillong, Feb 21: The Hills Farmers Union (HFU) on Monday apprised the Minister in-charge of Metrology, Renikton Tongkhar, over the issue of taxation by the middlemen of vegetables at ïewduh, Shillong.

Comander Shangpliang, the president of HFU, said the government should intervene as the middlemen have taken advantage of the taxation on vegetables at the market place at ïewduh.

“There is a signboard at Ïewduh which warns against the illegal taxation, but the middlemen have ignored these and set their own rates, therefore, today we met the Minister in-charge so to apprise him of the difficulties faced by our farmers and we have demanded that action should be taken against this illegality,” said Shangpliang.

He further said that the farmers have no issue if the measurements are measured accordingly. “Sometimes our vegetables weigh only three kilograms but according to the middlemen it weights more, the department should look into this matter seriously,” added Shangpliang.
