High turnout, sharp words: Dilip Saikia targets Congress, sees BJP edge in Assam polls

Must read

Guwahati, April 10: With polling concluded and turnout touching one of its highest levels in Assam, the political messaging has now shifted to interpretation and positioning. BJP Assam president Dilip Saikia on Friday struck a confident note, linking the surge in voter participation directly to public backing for the party.

Addressing a press conference at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, Saikia said the high turnout reflects a positive political environment and growing faith in the democratic process. He argued that the scale of participation is not incidental, but a response to what he described as years of governance and development under the BJP.

“The environment created in Assam over the last few years is reflected in the polling percentage. One of the highest turnouts shows the enthusiasm of the people and their commitment to democracy,” he said.

With turnout figures crossing the 85 percent mark, the BJP has begun framing the numbers as a sign of approval rather than protest. Saikia indicated that internal party assessments suggest the increased participation could work in its favour across multiple constituencies, especially where margins are expected to be tight.

At the same time, he sharpened his attack on the Congress, directly targeting party leader Pawan Khera. Saikia accused the Congress of attempting to mislead voters through what he called baseless allegations, questioning Khera’s credibility and intent.

“Congress is an old party and its mindset is well known. Pawan Khera has tried to mislead people. Applying for bail itself raises questions,” he said.

The remarks signal an early attempt by the BJP to control the post-poll narrative, presenting the high turnout as a validation of its governance while discrediting opposition claims. With results yet to be declared, both sides are reading into the same numbers, but drawing sharply different conclusions.

For the BJP, the argument is clear. High turnout reflects trust, and that trust, it believes, will translate into a strong mandate when votes are counted.
