Historic Act: BJP slams past govts for lip service on women reservation

Must read

SHILLONG, APR 16: Terming the Women’s Reservation Act a historic legislation, BJP chief spokesperson M. Kharkrang on Wednesday said previous governments had only used women’s empowerment as an election slogan, while it was the BJP-led Centre that ensured the Bill became law.

“The Women Reservation Bill has been lying dust for a long time. Earlier, the successive governments in the past have only spoken about it during the election campaigning and once the election is over, it is a closed chapter,” Kharkrang said.

“It is only now when the BJP has come to power, they have ensured that the Act gets passed and it becomes a law and we are waiting for the day that it becomes an Act and this will be one of the historic legislations that can be passed,” he added.

He said the country should be grateful to the BJP government for the move.

“For this, the people of India should be ever grateful to the BJP-led government at the Centre because lots of political parties in the past have spoken about women empowerment but it only ends up in speeches and propaganda and talking points during the election campaigns,” he stated.

“But here the BJP has already done the most important thing that was expected from the earlier government in the past by passing this Act,” Kharkrang said.

On implementation, he clarified that the reservation would take effect from the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

“Our candidates have already been declared before this becoming an Act and even the central government is starting this from the 2029 Lok Sabha election and this will be followed by the state governments later,” he said.

He added that the reservation would be implemented alongside delimitation.

“Why not, we will be definitely looking at that and that also will come with delimitation. So delimitation will come side by side with the reservation for women,” Kharkrang said.
Asked if the BJP had women candidates ready, he replied, “Of course, definitely why not. I am telling you we are contesting the MP elections. Even if elections have not been declared, we already have 5-6 candidates in line for the tickets. Definitely, the BJP will get the candidates who will be willing.”

“That is why I am saying once this Act is passed, we would definitely have women candidates to contest elections,” he added.
