Refugees, Manipur IDPs to be counted in census exercise

Aizawl, Apr 16: Refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, along with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from neighbouring Manipur taking shelter in Mizoram, will be included in the ongoing general census, officials said.

The Directorate of Census Operations clarified that all displaced individuals residing in rented accommodations or relief camps at the time of enumeration will be included in the count as part of the exercise.

According to official estimates, Mizoram is currently hosting over 28,000 refugees from Myanmar, around 2,300 from Bangladesh, and nearly 7,000 displaced persons from Manipur.

Officials emphasised that the census is a population enumeration exercise and not linked to citizenship verification. “All refugees taking shelter in Mizoram will be recorded at their respective places of residence, including villages and relief camps,” an official said.

The first phase of the census, focusing on house listing and housing data, began on April 1. A digital self-enumeration platform was also made available to residents from April 1 to April 15.

The canvasser method for the first phase commenced on April 16 and will continue till May 15. During this period, enumerators will visit households to collect data using a mobile application.

They will also verify and validate self-enumeration entries by collecting SE-IDs generated through the online platform during field visits.
