News 1:
As the demand to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India gains traction in the State, Meghalaya Government has decided to give a massive push to develop literature and promote the local languages with the objective of ensuring that they are included in the Eighth Schedule. Government has announced to fund such projects which will enrich the local literature, culture and the traditions. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday announced that the Government will support research, development and promotion of local languages by providing financial assistance to scholars, writers and authors. He said that the Government has been continuously engaging with the centre for inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, that would accord recognition to the language.

News 2:
Meghalaya Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, inaugurated the Meghalaya Pavilion at the second edition of the ‘World Food India 2023’, which commenced on Friday (November 3, 2023), at New Delhi. This three-day program will witness a special focus on the richness of millets as a food source, in view of 2023 being celebrated as the International Year of Millets, bringing together the global food processing industry.
To sustain and further enhance these efforts and boost farmers’ incomes, the Meghalaya Agriculture Marketing Board has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lulu Group, with the support of Apeda and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, to establish a strategic partnership aimed at mutual growth and promoting agricultural products from Meghalaya in the GCC countries.

News 3:
At least 128 people have died as of Saturday morning after a strong earthquake of 6.4 magnitude shook western Nepal on Friday night. According to reports, dozens of people have been injured as rescue operations are underway across the mountainous villages. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter Scale was recorded at 6.4 and the epicentre of the quake was in Nepal at depth of 10 km. The earthquake, which was centred near the western temple town of Jumla in Nepal, struck around 11:32 pm, the NCS said. Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center said its epicentre was at Jajarkot, which is about 250 miles northeast of the Nepal capital, Kathmandu.

News 4:
With barely three days before polling is held for election to the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly, the election campaign has reached its peak with the major political parties hurling accusations and counter accusations at each other. The political parties are going house to house seeking votes for their candidates. The assembly polls in Mizoram have become interesting after the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the second largest party in Mizoram legislative assembly, criticised ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) for not doing anything in their last five years. ZPM also urged the MNF party to leave the BJP-led NDA if the latter is against the BJP.

With the winter season on the horizon, Meghalaya is gearing up for a series of captivating winter activities. To kick off the much-anticipated Winter Tales 2023, a curtain raiser event was held at The Meghalayan Age, New Delhi, coinciding with the two-year anniversary of this cultural hub. Winter Tales, a beloved artisanal delight, is ready to attract visitors during its fourth edition, orchestrated by The Meghalayan Age Limited and curated by Dakti. The event is scheduled to be held from December 14 – 16, 2023 at the Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok) in Shillong. The curtain raiser was graced by the presence of Meghalaya’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, who took the stage as the Chief Guest. A captivating video retrospective was screened, chronicling the remarkable journey of Winter Tales from its modest inception in 2020 to its current grandeur.

News 6:
The acclaimed ‘The Bilgaro 4w Challenge’, a motor sport event for hill climb and sprint enthusiasts, is all set to roar across the serene environment of Garo Hills once again this year. The highly rated event will be held on November 17 – 18, 2023, at Anogre and Aguragre, respectively. Organized by the Tura Motor Sports Club (TMSC), the thrilling two-day event promises to push the adrenaline, skills and endurance of the motorists and their vehicles to the extreme. The first day will feature a dirt Sprint on a 13-km track at Anogre, starting from 8 AM. The second day will feature a Hill Climb on a 6-km track at Aguragre, starting from 8 AM. The participants will compete in different categories based on their vehicle specifications and performance. The registration, scrutiny, and driver’s briefing will be held at Café Aldara, Rongkhon, Tura, on November 15, 2023, from 2 PM to 5 PM.
