Shillong, June 15: Meghalaya police have apprehended once Trophius Nongbri for the suspected murder of his pregnant wife, Stefani Lyngdoh Nonglait, at their residence near the cemetery of the Phudmuri Presbyterian church in Mali-1, Mawlai Mawdatbaki.
The arrest was made after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed by the victim’s sister, Amanda Lyngdoh Nonglait, at the Mawlai police station on Thursday. Amanda expressed her suspicion that her brother-in-law might have been responsible for her sister’s death, as the circumstances surrounding her body’s discovery appeared to be shrouded in mystery.
According to Amanda’s statement, the family received news of her elder sister’s demise from her brother-in-law, who claimed that she had taken her own life. However, Amanda raised concerns regarding the presence of bruises on her sister’s neck, leading them to suspect foul play and suggesting that it could be a case of murder.
Confirming the developments, a senior police official stated that an FIR has been lodged for a suspected murder, and a case has already been registered at the Mawlai police station. The official further added, “But investigation is on to ascertain the truth.”
In an effort to gather more information, the police revisited the couple’s residence on Thursday, accompanied by a K-9 team, to allow the husband to recount the events leading up to the discovery of his wife’s body.
Following a post-mortem examination conducted at NEIGRIHMS hospital, the victim’s remains were subsequently handed over to her grieving relatives.
