Meghalaya’s $10 billion economy vision achievable with equitable distribution of family wealth, says Michael Syiem

Shillong, June 15: Convener of the Maitshaphrang Michael Syiem on Thursday said the vision of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to make Meghalaya aspire to emerge as a robust $10 billion economy by the year 2028 is achievable and worth encouraging, provided certain corrective steps are put in place, apart from initiating other revenue generating investments and more importantly, economically empowering all children of the family, to ensure a faster growth of the state’s economy to achieve the above target.

“With government jobs reaching a near saturation point, the state government’s policy to tackle growing unemployment by guiding the youth to inculcate an enterprising spirit of entrepreneurship…of risk taking and profit making and exploring their potentials with new and sometimes radical ideas should be part of the process to reach that goal,” Syiem said in a statement.

However, he said to take this path it is important for the government to take some bold decisions to break with certain traditional practices that are out of sync with the needs of the time.

“The introduction of a law on Equitable Distribution of Ancestral and Self Acquired Property will encourage our Hynniewtrep and Garo youth to use their inheritance as collateral for bank loans to invest in economic activities,” Syiem said while adding that “for those who come from families who have adequate wealth and resources, their investment in economic activities will have a multiplier effect, as I had written earlier, that will create more employment avenues for the unemployed indigenous youth of the state.”

Further, he said as more and more of our indigenous youth take up economic activity in the state and have greater control of the State’s economy, the wealth of the state will remain in the state and add to its economic strength and prevent it from draining away outside the state as what has been happening all these many years.

“This small step of equitably distributing the ancestral and self acquired property in the family, combined together with the immense talent of our youth and abundant resources available in our state, will have a far reaching impact on the economic growth of Meghalaya and will go a long way in helping the dream of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma come true,” Syiem asserted.
