Guwahati, April 16: In a major diplomatic and investment outreach initiative, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) hosted an Ambassadors’ Meet in New Delhi on April 15, drawing participation from over 80 countries.
The event aimed to highlight the vast economic potential of India’s North Eastern Region (NER) and to strengthen international partnerships for sustainable development.
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, described the eight northeastern states as “a strategic and economic asset” poised to become a vital hub of connectivity, trade, and innovation. “Each state in the region offers unique resources, strengths, and opportunities,” he said, inviting global stakeholders to invest in sectors ranging from tourism and infrastructure to handlooms and clean energy.

Minister of State for MDoNER, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, echoed the vision of the Prime Minister for a Viksit Bharat, emphasizing the government’s decade-long focus on upgrading the region’s infrastructure—particularly in air, rail, road, and waterways. “The North East is India’s Asthalakshmi,” he said, “and is rapidly emerging as a centre for industrial growth and regional integration.”
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also spoke at the event, highlighting his state’s natural resources and potential as part of the broader development narrative of the Northeast.
In a video message, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reinforced the strategic role of the North East in India’s Act East Policy. Citing projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, he noted the region’s capacity to serve as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
Secretary of MDoNER, Chanchal Kumar, presented a detailed overview of investment prospects across key sectors including IT and ITeS, healthcare, agriculture, education, sports, logistics, textiles, and energy. “NER’s untapped potential, combined with improving connectivity and policy support, offers fertile ground for global investment,” he said. He added that MDoNER would work closely with diplomatic missions and development agencies to channel expertise and resources into the region.

Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Periasamy Kumaran, emphasized the Northeast’s proximity to Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Nepal, and Myanmar. “This makes it not only a strategic buffer but a launchpad for India’s economic engagement with ASEAN and neighbouring countries,” he said, calling the meeting an important platform to forge partnerships and attract long-term investments.
The Ambassadors’ Meet also served as a curtain-raiser for the North East Investors Summit, scheduled for May 23–24 in New Delhi.
According to MDoNER, the enthusiastic response from participating countries reflects the growing global interest in engaging with the Northeast as a dynamic investment destination.
Senior officials from the ministry and the governments of the northeastern states attended the event.
