Shillong, Nov 3: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) held its 11th Convocation with grandeur and academic distinction, graced by the presence of Padma Bhushan Dr. Senapathy Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-founder of Infosys and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

A visionary technocrat and one of the architects of India’s IT revolution, Dr. Gopalakrishnan delivered an inspiring convocation address, urging graduates to embrace innovation, ethical values, and entrepreneurship. “Innovation and entrepreneurship must be inculcated at universities, as they are the driving forces of national progress and self-reliance,” he said, lauding USTM for its progressive vision and social commitment.

The ceremony was attended by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to pursue perseverance and purpose-driven careers.

A total of 1,618 students — 762 undergraduates, 824 postgraduates, and 32 PhD scholars were conferred degrees at the convocation. A total of 54 gold medals were awarded to outstanding achievers for academic excellence.

Among the top awardees, Dikshita Kalita (M.Sc. Zoology) received the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Gold Medal for Best Postgraduate Student, Sumu Boruah (B.Pharm.) was honoured with the P.A. Sangma Gold Medal for Best Undergraduate Student, and Jeremaiah Warbah (B.A. Administration & Governance) earned the Chancellor’s Gold Medal.

The university fondly remembered late Dr. Zubeen Garg, the cultural icon of Assam who was conferred an Honorary D.Litt. at USTM’s 10th Convocation. A 30-second silence was observed in his memory, and the newly instituted Zubeen Garg Memorial Gold Medal was awarded to Sabrina Alam (B.Sc. Biotechnology) for excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, and community engagement.

Opening the convocation, USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque highlighted the university’s rapid growth and national recognition, saying, “Your magic has attracted the nation’s greatest minds — from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Ram Nath Kovind, and the Chief Justice of India, to the ISRO Chairman — who next?”

The ceremony concluded with the Graduates’ Oath, the signing of the Convocation Register, and the National Anthem — marking another milestone in USTM’s journey of excellence and innovation.
