Tura, Dec 2: With the world set to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Sunday, various departments in West Garo Hills came together to observe the day on Saturday at Monfort Centre for Education, Danakgre near Tura since December 3 is a Sunday, this year. Throughout the programme, stress was laid on getting proper documentation and ID cards made for the persons with disabilities in order to avail various schemes by the government.
The programme was organized by the District Social Welfare Office, West Garo Hills, Tura in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Monfort Centre for Education, Tura on the theme “United in Action to Rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”. Officials from District Medical & Health Office, Tura, District Legal Services Authority, Staff and students of Monfort Centre for Education and differently abled persons and their caretakers from the District attended the function.
Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, the District Medical and Health Officer, Tura, Dr. B Debbarma, informed that the day is dedicated to promote the rights and well being of the persons with disabilities. He further highlighted the importance of inclusivity, accessibility and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, while also celebrating their achievements and contributions to the society and mentioned that the Government of India along with the State Government provides various financial assistance under different schemes for their benefit.
The District Social Welfare Officer, Tura, Silje A. Sangma highlighted that the day is observed to raise awareness about the equal opportunities to be given to persons with disabilities so that they can participate equally and effectively in society without any barriers. Mentioning the theme of disability day, she said that everyone should work together to make the world better for people with disabilities. Further, she also informed that the persons with disabilities should obtain Disability Certificate, Aadhar Number and other necessary documents for availing various financial aid provided by the Government.
Earlier, the Medical Team from District Medical & Health Office, Tura assisted in health check up of the persons with disabilities during the programme.
Various songs and dance items were presented by physically challenged students of Monfort Centre of Education, Tura.
