‘Is Writing Still Relevant?’: Tura Christian College hosts thought-provoking lecture

Must read

Tura, June 25: With AI-generated content increasingly prevalent, though making it easier to express thoughts and ideas, human originality and creative writing seems to have taken a back seat. To motivate students into writing and inspire intellectual input, the Tura Christian College (TCC) hosted a special lecture titled “Writing in Today’s Generation: Is Writing Still Relevant?”, on Wednesday at its seminar hall.

The program commenced with an introduction by Yankitina Goldiva D Sangma, Assistant Professor in the English Department at TCC and Dr. Sanggra A. Sangma, former Secretary of the Governing Body, TCC, delivering the welcome address.

The keynote speaker, Mike M. Sangma, Senior Associate Editor at CNN-IBN and a Media Professional based in New Delhi, delivered an insightful address covering the historical significance of writing and talked about his media career, noting the need for quick decision-making and writing under pressure. He also discussed social media as a modern avenue for personal expression and storytelling.

Sangma noted the importance of being present on social media platforms, highlighting both its positive and negative aspects, viewing them as contemporary avenues for personal expression and storytelling.

He also shared insights from his personal journey, detailing his path from overcoming financial challenges to pursuing education in Delhi University, and his experiences in the media industry, starting with a news agency and moving to prominent news channels like Times Now and Headlines Today.

The session also featured an interactive discussion, where the ethical considerations of using AI tools for content generation were addressed. Sangma asserted that AI should complement human originality and intellectual input rather than replace it. The discussion explored AI’s potential to enhance productivity while advocating for a balanced integration into creative processes to preserve individual expression.

This insightful lecture at Tura Christian College reinforced the idea that the relevance of writing remains a cornerstone of academic and professional development in an evolving technological landscape.
