Jackfruit farming can ensure socio-economic development of the people: Conrad at Jackfruit Mela 2022

Tura, July 19: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the Jackfruit Mela 2022 at SMELC, Dakopgre Tura.

The jackfruit mission is a flagship programme of the Government launched in July 2018.

During the launch, the Chief Minister said that Garo Hills being a tropical region provides a conducive environment for jackfruit plantation.

He said jackfruit plantation amounts to Rs. 400 crore and, if leveraged in right earnest, will ensure socio-economic development of the people.

“Demand for jackfruit is very high globally and farmers from Garo Hills should take advantage of the Government programme and leverage their business and avail all assistance from the department,” he said.

He informed that in the past four years Government had made various interventions for the farmers and the jackfruit mission has led to production of different value added jackfruit products.

He also spoke about jackfruit as substitute to meat for the vegans.

He also elaborately spoke on the Focus programme that has aided farmers to upscale their farming and other income generation activities.

He said 4.5 lakh farmers will benefit from the scheme and about 2.5 lakh have already availed assistance from the scheme.

In the Jackfruit Mela, the Chief Minister also handed over 5 power trillers under the Special Assistance to Tribal Sub-Scheme and officially rolled out the scheme for distribution of power trillers in Garo Hills region.

Mission Jackfruit

This mission is being implemented by the Directorate of Food Processing. This mission helps to catalyse and promote sustainable rural and urban livelihoods, assist the beneficiaries through establishment of small scale and nano enterprises, creation of a value chain for jackfruit products and generating employment opportunities along the value chain for unemployed youth, protect and preservation of catchment areas, providing an additional source of income for rural and urban families through the commercialization of its processing and value addition, developing the markets for jackfruit and its value added products through a focused and professional go to market and field to fork strategy.
