Shillong, July 9: A vast number of people from 16 constituencies in West Jaintia Hills district have opposed delimitation of constituencies under JHADC, citing various drawbacks.

The Delimitation Committee of the JHADC conducted the public hearing on Tuesday for the 16 constituencies of West Jaiñtia Hills at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong Jowai.

Some of the objections were raised because the villages now fall under a particular administrative block while under the proposed draft they will fall under a different block.

Others have complained that the delimitation process was undertaken without consulting the village heads. A handful of speakers voiced their opinion that the delimitation should have been done according to the geographical boundaries.

Some villages even threatened that if the delimitation was carried out as proposed, they would boycott the upcoming MDC elections.

They further warned of not allowing polling stations to be set up in their villages. Others have also threatened to take the matter to the court. Only a handful of villages agreed to the draft delimitation.

The delimitation hearing was held for, Amwi-Khliehtyrshi, Mukhla-Ummulong, Moodymmai-Nongkhroh, Wahiajer-Kyndong, Moodop–Umladang, Mynso-Nongjngi, Mynsngat–Khanduli, Shiliangmyntang-Namdong, Barato-Mukroh, Mowtyrshiah–Saphai, Sahsniang-Mowkaiaw, Raliang, Shangpung, Jowai – North, Jowai–Central and Jowai–South, constituencies.

Meanwhile, the committee urged the public to send their grievances before July 19, 2024 before 3 pm.
