Judicial Commission to probe Zubeen Garg’s death; Garima Garg submits statement to court

Must read

Guwahati, Oct 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the formation of a judicial commission to oversee the investigation into the sudden death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia, a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court.

Speaking during a live address on Friday, CM Sarma said this was the first time the state government had formally appealed to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to constitute a judicial commission for a case of such significance. The appeal specifically requested that the panel be chaired by a sitting judge rather than a retired one. Acting on this request, the Chief Justice appointed Justice Saikia to head the probe.

“I am happy to announce that we have taken another major step forward in ensuring justice for Zubeen Garg. The Hon’ble Chief Justice has appointed Justice Soumitra Saikia to chair the commission. We will formally constitute the commission tomorrow,” CM Sarma said, extending his gratitude to the Chief Justice.

The Chief Minister also urged Zubeen Garg’s fans to actively participate in the process by submitting affidavits to the commission. “Now, it is the responsibility of all Zubeen fans to approach the commission and submit their affidavits. From this point, the ball is in their court,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, has approached the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, submitting all relevant documents and a detailed statement regarding the circumstances and suspects linked to her husband’s untimely death. Her statement was recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC.

Garima told the court that she had no knowledge of Zubeen being taken to the island in Singapore and was unaware of the yacht party planned before the incident. She further alleged that Zubeen’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, did not inform her even on the day prior to the tragedy. The court is expected to examine these claims closely in the coming days.

The development comes as the Gauhati High Court, on Friday, formally approved the request to set up the judicial commission. This followed the Assam CID’s move to add murder charges against two prime accused in the case.

So far, four individuals have been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police.
