Guwahati, July 16: Manipur has marked a historic milestone with the central government notifying on Tuesday the appointment of Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh as a judge of the Supreme Court.

This is the first instance that any person from Manipur has been elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Apart from Justice Singh, the Central government has also notified the appointment of Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice, R Mahadevan as judges of the Supreme Court.

Born on March 1, 1963 at Imphal Manipur, Justice Singh is the son of (late) Justice N Ibotombi Singh of the Gauhati High Court. After completing his studies in 1986 from Delhi University, Justice Singh practiced in the Supreme Court for a brief period.

He then shifted to the Gauhati High Court and was designated as a senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 2008. Justice Singh was sworn in as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011 and the following year he was made a permanent judge.

After the Manipur High Court was created in 2013, he was appointed as a judge there. In 2018, Justice Singh was transferred to the Gauhati High Court and then he was elevated as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court thereafter till 2022. After that he was elevated as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court from February 2023.

Meanwhile, Justice Singh and Justice Mahadevan were recommended for appointment as judges by the Supreme Court Collegium on July 11. The strength of the judges in the Supreme Court has now gone up to its full strength of 34 judges with these two appointments of judges.
