Guwahati, July 16: A Congress team led by AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh on Tuesday visited Assam’s Morigaon district and met with flood victims.

Singh was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, MLAs Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Rekibuddin Ahmed and Nandita Das.

They distributed flood materials among the flood affected people in the Mayang area of Morigaon district.

Speaking to reporters, APCC chief Borah said, “It is very unfortunate that this area under Jagiroad assembly constituency which is represented by Assam minister Pijush Hazarika. You can see the situation for last 15 days, people were under flood and they got relief for one day. 1 kg rise, 200 gram dal, this is just situation of relief. Now government saying opposition is doing politics over flood. If giving relief to the people is politics than (we) will repeat and will do again.”

AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh Alwar said, “Today I am very sad that the way the government is acting. So many floods have happened in Assam, more than 70 people have died, 30 lakh people have been affected by floods, but what is the government doing? I have been watching this for the last 10 years, every time before Lok Sabha election and Assembly election, Modi ji said that now floods will not come. You are talking about a double engine, where there is not even a single engine, where is the double engine? Till now relief material have not been found.”

The flood situation in Assam has improved gradually even as over 5 lakh people in 17 districts are still reeling under the deluge, official sources said on Tuesday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah telephoned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the situation, reiterating assurance of all help from the Centre. CM Sarma also received a call from his Odisha counterpart offering use of the eastern state’s disaster management system to mitigate the challenges.
