Shillong, Jun 25: The state’s power department is carrying out daily checks to curb electricity theft, with Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Power Sanjay Goyal saying the practice may be limited but still hurts honest consumers.
Goyal said the department’s investigation wing operates statewide, not just in select pockets of Garo Hills.
“We have an investigation wing, not only in Garo Hills areas which are just small areas but in the entire corporation, we do this as a routine and daily kind of activity,” he said.
“This is a direct loss to corporations and through you I would appeal to the public that those who are genuine consumers, face problems because of these kinds of illegal practices by very few of them.”He noted that theft is not rampant, but the department is acting wherever violations occur.

“As I said it is not common, it is happening in certain areas, we are taking up the activities which are mandated to act under the law. The Electricity Act allows us to take action against such individuals who are involved in illegal theft of electricity, this is not allowed under the law,” Goyal said.According to him, illegal connections create a double impact.
“It brings loss to the corporation and side by side it brings more financial burden to the genuine consumers because somewhere somebody is getting impacted,” he said. Goyal added that offenders are being tracked and billed for losses.
“We have our investigation wing, we keep on checking these kinds of illegal activities and we raise the compensation bill and people pay it also,” he said.
The department has appealed to consumers to report illegal tapping so that service quality and tariffs for legitimate users do not suffer.
