Trekking into history: Kamrup DC's bold journey to Lumpi sparks hope for development

In December 2024, Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra had trekked 25 kilometers from Boko to Lumpi area. Lumpi is located 30 kilometers from Boko and 110 kilometers from Guwahati.

On Sunday morning, DC Mishra, accompanied by Siddhartha Goswami, Chief Executive Officer of Kamrup Zilla Parishad, and several colleagues, embarked on a 16-kilometer trek from Boko to Hahim. The journey also included Dibash Bordoloi, Circle Officer of Boko, members of the Kamrup district unit of the All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU), and many local residents.

As the team traversed through villages such as Jarapara, Mouman, Haldhipara, Lalmati, and Nalapara along the Assam-Meghalaya border, they were warmly received and felicitated by the villagers. Along the route, Mishra engaged with locals to discuss their pressing concerns, including inadequate infrastructure and essential services. He also inspected polling stations ahead of the upcoming Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) elections.

During the trek, villagers of Nalapara highlighted the incomplete water supply scheme that has led to acute drinking water shortages. In response, DC Mishra personally visited the site and directed the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to expedite the project’s completion.

Upon reaching Hahim, the residents voiced their concerns about the severe erosion of the Hahim market due to the river’s encroachment, which has already washed away multiple shops and houses. DC Mishra assured immediate intervention from the administration to mitigate the crisis.

Additionally, locals raised an issue regarding banking services, stating that despite submitting proper documents, they are unable to open accounts as banks classify Hahim under Meghalaya. Addressing the grievance, DC Mishra promised to resolve the matter at the earliest.

Reflecting on his visit, DC Mishra said, “Hahim is a place of great attraction. While I have visited the area for picnics before, this was my first visit as Deputy Commissioner. We planned to reach Hahim on foot from Boko, and I am glad we successfully completed the trek. Our focus remains on addressing villagers’ concerns and ensuring timely solutions.”

He further emphasized the potential of Hahim as a tourist destination and assured that necessary steps would be taken to develop the area.

Kamburam Rabha, a resident of Hahim, expressed gratitude to the DC and his team, stating that such initiatives provide villagers with an opportunity to directly communicate their problems. He also recalled DC Mishra’s previous visit to the remote Lumpi village, which was similarly aimed at understanding the difficulties faced by those living in isolated regions.

Locals say the proactive approach of DC Mishra and his team has instilled confidence among the people of Boko and its adjoining villages, marking a significant step towards sustainable development and better governance in the region.
