Shillong, Feb 2: The MDA-led Meghalaya Government on Friday decided to approve the proposal for the extension of the present terms of both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Counci (JHADC) for another six months.
The terms of both these two Councils would expire on March 4, 2024. The extension will begin from March 5th for six months. The reason for the extension was after the two Councils had sought the extension for the delimitation committee to complete the delimitation exercise.
The Governor, last year, had granted both the councils to constitute delimitation committees and this committee is on the job as per prescribed guidelines.
“Recently both the Councils sent the proposal to the state government for extension of the delimitation committee and it was examined by the department of District Council Affairs (DCA) and the state government,” informed deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong after the cabinet meeting on Friday.
The latest development means the election of the councils have also been postponed by atleast 6 months.
However, the decision of the government will be sent to the Governor for approval.
