Shillong, June 14: The Khasi Jaintia Fish Whole Seller and Retailer Association (KJFWRA) have raised concerns regarding the infrequency of formalin detection in fish by the State government.
This question follows the imposition of a 15-day ban on the import and sale of fish from outside Meghalaya, as several fish samples tested positive for ‘formalin’ during laboratory tests.
Speaking to reporters, Mitchel Wankhar, the president of KJFWRA, expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to prohibit the importation of fish from Andhra Pradesh. Wankhar emphasised that these fish had undergone testing before being brought into the state.
Wankhar questioned why formalin detection occurs only once every five years, as a similar ban was enforced in 2018. Furthermore, he sought clarification on whether the fish samples were tested specifically from Andhra Pradesh or from other states.
