SHILLONG, FEB 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle has written to the Surgeon Superintendent of Shillong Civil Hospital, expressing concerns over the presence of individuals and groups around the hospital area, posing a threat to passerby, especially students and office-goers.
” (We) would like to bring to your attention the growing number of drug addicts who come for rehab at Civil Hospital and after their time at the hospital end up loitering around and outside the hospital, specifically around the Civil hospital junction which poses as a serious threat to the passerby specially to the school and college students and even office goers who often take that route to return home as many complaints have been received by the Union as the presence of these individuals group in that area often results to foul remarks and even eve teasing and many have complaint that they feel unsafe passing through that area and are often force to take the barik pine mount school route to return home to Laban,”said the union in the letter.

“We have received complaints that these individuals often make foul remarks and even indulge in eve-teasing, making people feel unsafe,” it said.
The union cited an incident where an elderly man was harassed and demanded money by a group, and requested the hospital authorities to take action to remove these individuals from the area.
“We humbly request you to take action to maintain peace and safety for people who come for treatment and for pedestrians around the hospital,” the letter stated.
The union also offered to work with the hospital authorities to maintain safety and security in the area and informed that they would be sticking up “No Smoking Area” posters around the hospital to create awareness.
