SHILLONG, JUL 13: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded the immediate arrest of an accused male nurse and action against those allegedly supporting him in a case of sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl at NEIGRIHMS.
A delegation of the KSU met the East Khasi Hills SP on Monday and submitted a complaint regarding the incident that allegedly occurred on July 4, 2026.
In the letter, KSU alleged that after an appendix operation, the minor was taken to an observation room and left alone without an attendant or female nurse.
“She was left alone with a male nurse who sexually assaulted her but she could not shout or scream for help as she was out of operation and had no strength,” the letter stated.
The Union said the girl told her mother about the incident after being shifted to the ward. An FIR was filed at Mawdiangdiang Outpost the same day, but KSU alleged there was no immediate police action.
“The police did not take any steps on the given day even though the matter was serious in nature,” it said. KSU claimed police visited NEIGRIHMS only on July 6 after the Union intervened. The letter also mentioned a protest on July 7 by some male nurses and staff “in support of the said person,” and said a second FIR was lodged but carried weaker BNS sections.
KSU urged that Section 17 of the POCSO Act be added for abetment.
“The Union condemns the inability of the police not to arrest the person who has committed this crime. Moreover, since he is not from Shillong, there is every possibility that he may escape,” the complaint said. KSU also asked NEIGRIHMS to suspend those involved to prevent tampering of evidence.
After the meeting, KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar said the SP assured that the case will be fast-tracked.
“The SP has assured that the police will fast track this case. They have taken the statement of the victim and witnesses… within a couple of weeks’ time they are going to chargesheet this matter,” he said.
Najiar also questioned NEIGRIHMS over the absence of female staff.
“We also put a question to the NEIGRIHMS authority is that why were there no female nurses present when that child was taken to another room for observation… the law also prescribed that a female nurse has to be present whenever there is a female patient involved,” he said.
The Union said it has submitted a separate letter to NEIGRIHMS seeking accountability.
