GUWAHATI, May 24: In a proud moment for Assam, Rupamoni Gorh from Lakhimpur has become the first Assamese woman mountaineer to scale Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
Gorh was part of the 11-member all-women expedition organised by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The team successfully reached the summit through the South Col route on May 21, 2026, marking ITBP’s first-ever all-women Everest expedition.
The expedition had Bhanita Timungpi of Assam, deputy leader of the mission, further adding pride to Assam’s achievement.
Congratulating Gorh, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the achievement was a matter of immense pride for Assam and an inspiration for the youth to dream big and conquer new heights.
“Assam’s daughter has reached the top of the world. Heartiest congratulations to Rupamoni Gorh for becoming the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest as part of the ITBP all-women expedition team,” Sarma posted on X.

The Assam Congress also congratulated Gorh, describing her achievement as a proud chapter not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast.
“The daughter of Lakhimpur has set an inspiring example of courage, perseverance and determination through this extraordinary feat. Her success will inspire future generations to dream big and work hard to achieve those dreams,” the party stated.
According to reports, the 14-member expedition team, including 11 women climbers and three technical staff, battled extreme weather, icy terrain and low oxygen levels in the dangerous “death zone” above 8,000 metres before reaching the summit.
The expedition, flagged off on April 19 after months of training and preparation, also carried a message of environmental protection under the “Clean Himalaya – Save Glacier” campaign, during which the team collected waste from the mountain region.
“From the banks of the Brahmaputra to the summit of Everest, Rupamoni Gorh’s historic achievement has become a moment of pride for Assam and the Northeast”, a former Assam minister said.
