Last-minute switch pays off: Borah, Bordoloi win on BJP tickets

Must read

Guwahati, May 4: In a dramatic turn in Assam’s political landscape, two senior Congress leaders—Bhupen Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi—have clinched victories on BJP tickets after switching sides just days before the 2026 Assembly elections.

Borah, contesting from Bihpuria, defeated Congress rival Narayan Bhuyan by 8,236 votes. He secured 73,050 votes against Bhuyan’s 64,814, with other candidates trailing far behind.

In Dispur, Bordoloi delivered a commanding performance, defeating Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami by a massive margin of 49,667 votes. He polled 1,03,337 votes, while Goswami received 53,670. Independent candidate Jayanta Kumar Das garnered 22,802 votes, and AAP’s Ballav Patra managed 1,323.

Both leaders were once key figures in the Congress, having held important roles during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Their last-minute shift to the BJP—and subsequent wins—underscore a significant realignment in Assam politics.

With their victories secured under new political colours, focus is now likely to shift to the positions they may be entrusted with in the BJP-led government.
