Shillong, Dec 2: Amidst growing speculations over TMC leader and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul’s Sangma possible return to Congress, NPP leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma on Monday said prominent political leaders never go back to their old party but they build their new house.
Speaking to media persons, Rakkam said a leader who decides to stand on his own will decide on his future.
“Captain Williamson Sangma never went back to APHLC, Purno A Sangma never went back to the Congress. Leaders build their new house,” he stated.
Talking about former CM Dr. Mukul Sangma, who left the Congress and joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC), Rakkam said, “He has his own house. Mukul is TMC leader. He had fought well in Gambegre. They have stood second and had put Congress to third position, so his presence is significant, but it is up to him to decide. I am nobody to talk about Mukul. He is my senior leader but I don’t know the reason why he moved out of Congress.”
The NPP leader was of the opinion that the reason which compelled Mukul to leave should be cured first if the Congress wants him back.
“But I don’t know whether it has been cured or not. If you look at the genesis and history of our state, Mukul Sangma was groomed and prepared by PA Sangma, they were the same together but, in the process (something) happened,” he said.
Couple of days back, Dr Mukul also took to the social media to express his thoughts on this matter, which has become a hot topic of discussion. While he did not disclose anything in categorical terms, he urged all to wait for few days to hear on this matter from him.
“While I have been recuperating from brief illness, I have not been able to meet, nor speak to, all my good friends from the media fraternity for quite some time – but, as one of the news headlines in a media channel is in circulation today, speculative political narratives do get generated by the vibrant media due to the ever evolving political dynamics. Though I sincerely appreciate the members of the “fourth estate” for being active and vigilant besides the hard work (working overtime) to ensure news dissemination for all of us, my sincere request to all is to wait for few more days in as far as this narrative is concerned – it will be nice and appropriate to hear from the horses mouth,” he wrote on his social media page.
Meanwhile, on the Gambegre bye-election result, Rakkam said NPP’s victory in the Gambegre bye-election is a testimony that MP election is a completely different story and said Gambegre was Congress MP from Tura Saleng A Sangma’s stronghold but now “he had to vacate as his party could not retain the seat”.
“This speaks volumes of how NPP under the dynamic and powerful leadership of Conrad K Sangma, we hope Meghalaya will grow,” he added.
Asked on the recent joining of some NPP leaders to the Congress, Rakkam said, “Outcome of political dynamics is not as you predicted. NPP won the Gambegre seat with a thumping majority and some political workers and leaders from VPP, NPP have joined Congress, this is the dynamics of politics, and we cannot predict what will happen today and tomorrow.”
He however said if some 500 people have joined the Congress, in Gambegre more than 8,000 joined the NPP. “See the difference. This is nothing new in politics. Joining will happen because of the MDC elections (are) coming up,” he stated.
