Light snowfall likely in Arunachal high altitudes, fog to linger across Northeast: IMD

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 29:Light snowfall is likely in the higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh over the next few days, while much of the Northeast is set to experience dry weather, persistent fog and a gradual dip in night temperatures, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In its five-day outlook, the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, said light rain may occur at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, with snowfall likely at higher altitudes. Assam could also see light rain at a few isolated locations on some days, though largely dry conditions are expected to prevail across Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Meteorological officials said there is no significant change expected in minimum temperatures across the region for now, but a gradual fall in night temperatures is likely in the coming days. Morning hours are expected to remain challenging, with shallow to moderate fog predicted at isolated places across all Northeastern states. In parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur, dense fog may occur at isolated locations.

The prevailing weather conditions have been attributed to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh at around 1.5 km above mean sea level, while another circulation over northeast Assam has weakened.

During the past 24 hours, light rain was reported at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, while dry weather prevailed across the rest of the region. Night temperatures remained above normal in several states, including Assam and Meghalaya, the IMD said.

For Guwahati and adjoining areas, the forecast indicates fog or mist during morning hours, followed by mainly clear skies later in the day. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 20°C and 23°C, while minimum temperatures may hover between 12°C and 16°C over the next week.

The weather office has advised commuters and travellers—especially those heading to high-altitude areas of Arunachal Pradesh—to exercise caution due to reduced visibility and the possibility of slippery conditions during early morning hours.
