Lok Sabha Polls: Election Commission issues major transfer orders in Assam and Punjab

New Delhi, Mar 21: The Election Commission of India has made significant transfers in Punjab and Assam. The EC has swapped out district police chiefs who have family ties to influential politicians.

In addition to this, non-cadre district magistrates and superintendents of police have been removed from their positions in various states, which includes Punjab, Odisha, Gujarat, and West Bengal.

Districts where relatives of prominent politicians held roles as District magistrate or Superintendent of Police, transfers have been enacted.

SSP of Bathinda in Punjab and the SP of Sonitpur in Assam who is also the younger brother of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma are also among the ones who have been transferred.

The Election Commission has clarified that this move by them comes with an aim to prevent any concerns about biased administration with just a few weeks remaining for the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls that starts on April 19.
