Guwahati, April 28: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (SFT) apprehended two men, Jamal Ali and Salim Uddin, with approximately 1.5 kilograms of suspected heroin. The narcotics, concealed ingeniously in a Maruti Suzuki WagonR, are estimated to be worth nearly Rs 12 crore in the international market.
The operation, spearheaded by SFT officer Kalyan Pathak, unfolded near the Khanapara Veterinary Field in Guwahati on Sunday. The vehicle, which bore the registration number AS01FN7633, was stopped based on precise intelligence received by the authorities.
“We had reliable information about the transportation of banned substances through this route,” Officer Pathak stated. “By setting a carefully planned trap, we were able to intercept the vehicle and confirm the presence of the hidden compartment designed to smuggle drugs.”
The accused, both hailing from Goroimari in Kamrup district, had allegedly modified their vehicle to create a secret compartment for drug concealment, showcasing the lengths to which drug traffickers will go to evade law enforcement.
The arrest of Ali and Uddin marks a significant victory for the Assam Police in their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The northeastern state has been increasingly vigilant against the rise in drug-related activities, with multiple operations leading to significant seizures in recent months.
Further investigations are underway as the police delve deeper into the network behind this operation, aiming to dismantle the channels facilitating such illicit activities. The Assam Police are also coordinating with other state agencies to trace the origin and intended distribution points of the seized heroin.
This operation is part of a larger state-wide initiative to clamp down on drug trafficking, which has seen an uptick in the region. The Assam government has pledged to continue its strict stance against narcotics, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
