Tura, Dec 10: Vengaboys and Me.gong Festival turned Jengjal venue into what is being touted as the biggest crowds to assemble at one spot in recent history of Garo Hills with thousands of vehicles on the 30 km stretch from Tura to Jengjal turning the route into a nightmare for commuters on Saturday evening.

So large was the gathering that it even left organisers and traffic organisers stunned by the sheer force of the numbers.

“Problem we faced was that many vehicle owners parked on both sides of the road and left for the venue and it became difficult to manoeuvre for vehicles trying to pass from either side,” said a member of the traffic arrangement team.

“Visitors were coming in large numbers from Assam side through Paikan, from Shillong side through Williamnagar and the Garo Hills crowds through Tura, we were overwhelmed,” said a volunteer.

Such was the volume of traffic that many were stuck on the route for hours and had to turn back without even touching down at Me.gong fest.

“We had left Tura by 3 pm in fear that traffic would be heavy. But we encountered such a congestion I couldn’t get my family into Jengjal. We had to turn back and return to Tura,” says a lady health worker who went from Gambegre.

“I was able to return home in Tura in the early hours of the morning only after I changed routes. I went all the way to Samanda, near Williamnagar, and then took the old Williamnagar to Tura route via Oragitok and Bansamgre before coming out at Asanang where traffic was much better,” said a PWD engineer who had gone to enjoy the musical fest at Me.gong.

Others were not so lucky. Many spent the night on the road in lines of vehicles stretching more than 20 kms, between Jengjal and Tura.

“It is also a lesson for us to be better prepared next time. One can never tell the sheer numbers and the crowds,” said a visitor who missed Vengaboys.
