Imphal, Aug 1: In a rare moment of unity and cross-community solidarity amidst the ongoing ethnic tensions between the Kuki-Zo community and the Meitei community in the State, a 45-year-old Meitei woman from Pangal Tabi was safely rescued by Kuki villagers after becoming disoriented in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur.
The woman is from Pangal Tabi, Manning Lekai of Kakching district.
On July 30, the woman, who appeared confused and lost, had strayed into the Kuki area of Senam. Recognizing her distress, local Kuki villagers took immediate action to ensure her safety. They escorted her to the Assam Rifles’ Mobile Vehicle Checkpost in Tengnoupal.
During initial questioning, the woman revealed that she had been searching for her husband, who has been missing for over five months. Her unintended entry into the Kuki region from Pallel was a result of her desperate search for her spouse, as she asked the villagers for help.
The Kuki villagers, goodwill gesture, handed her over to the Assam Rifles.
The Assam Rifles then escorted her to Pallel, where she was safely handed over to the police for further assistance.
The prompt and empathetic response by the Kuki villagers played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of a Meitei women. This act by Kuki villagers depicted a rare sense of harmony among both the communities in these testing times when the whole state is engulfed in communal conflict.
At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3, 2023 in Manipur.
