Imphal, Nov 20: With no major incidents reported from any district in Manipur, authorities relaxed curfew in four Imphal Valley districts on Wednesday and lifted the suspension on broadband internet with conditions.
Officials stated that the curfew in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts was relaxed from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. to allow residents to purchase essential items and carry out important tasks. Similar curfew relaxations were implemented on Tuesday in three Imphal Valley districts, coinciding with the conditional restoration of broadband internet services.
Peaceful rallies were held across the state, with significant participation in Churachandpur, where hundreds marched with empty coffins demanding justice for those killed in a recent gunfight with security forces in Jiribam. Meanwhile, civil society groups organized a procession in Imphal West to protest the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) reimposition in parts of the state.
Security forces intensified search operations and conducted area domination drills in vulnerable hill and valley districts to maintain order. Essential vehicular movement along National Highways 37 and 2 was closely monitored, ensuring the safe passage of 121 and 261 vehicles carrying critical supplies. Security convoys were deployed along sensitive stretches to counter potential threats.
In a related development, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, urging her intervention to protect lives and property in Manipur. He accused the Central and state governments of failing to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
