Imphal, Jan 4: In a joint effort, Manipur Congress and several organizations submitted complaints on Wednesday, accusing both the Central and state governments of various lapses in addressing the ethnic riot that erupted on May 3, last year, in the State. The complaints were presented to the Commission of Inquiry, currently investigating the incidents.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Vice-President Hareshwar Goshwami and AICC Member and lawyer Ningombam Bupenda Meitei submitted the complaints in New Delhi.
While the Congress leaders refrained from disclosing the specifics, sources indicate that the complaints highlight shortcomings in the Central and state governments’ handling of the ethnic riot between the Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zo communities over the past eight months.
The Congress has persistently called for the resignation of the BJP-led Manipur government, headed by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, citing its alleged failure in addressing the ethnic hostilities.
Additionally, affected individuals from the Meitei community in Serou and Sugnu, Manipur, submitted their complaints separately to the Commission in New Delhi.
Home Minister Amit Shah, during his four-day visit to Manipur from May 29 to June 1 last year, announced the formation of the Commission of Inquiry to investigate the devastating ethnic riot. The Home Ministry later constituted the three-member Commission of Inquiry, headed by retired Chief Justice Ajai Lamba of the Gauhati High Court, to probe the ethnic violence in Manipur.
The ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo community erupted following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
