Guwahati, Feb 20: In a crucial move to restore peace and stability in Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has issued an appeal urging individuals in possession of looted and illegal weapons to surrender them within the next seven days. The call comes after more than 20 months of unrest that has deeply affected both the valley and hill communities in the state.
The Governor emphasized that voluntary surrender of arms would not invite punitive action, provided the weapons are returned within the stipulated period to the nearest police station, outpost, or security forces camp. However, he warned that strict action would be taken against those who continue to possess illegal arms after the deadline.
“In the greater interest of restoring normalcy, so that people can return to their day-to-day activities, all communities in the state must come forward to ensure the cessation of hostilities and the maintenance of peace and order,” Bhalla stated in an official communiqué.
The prolonged unrest in Manipur has resulted in significant hardship for civilians, disrupting daily life, economic activities, and communal harmony. The appeal seeks to create an opportunity for reconciliation and rebuilding.
“The government is committed to ensuring a peaceful resolution of the situation and safeguarding the future of our youth. Let us rebuild our state together with hope and trust for a brighter future. Come forward and choose peace,” the Governor urged.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and security forces remain on high alert to facilitate a smooth surrender process. The state government’s appeal is seen as a crucial step toward de-escalating tensions and fostering long-term peace in the region.
