Imphal, Aug 23: After three months of intense ethnic violence in Manipur, good news has come for the affected citizens as the state government has decided to hand over pre-fabricated houses to violence affected people from Wednesday (August 23, 2023) onwards.
Manipur Chief Minister earlier announced that 4,000 prefabricated temporary homes would be constructed in different districts for the people displaced in the ethnic violence, which broke out on May 3, 2023.
Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Khumanthem Diana Devi stated, “It is hereby informed to all the concerned that temporary shelter homes for the displaced families constructed at Sajiwa Jail Complex by Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd. shall be handed over to the displaced families of Imphal East at 10 AM on 23rd August, 2023 at Sajiwa Jail Complex, Imphal by N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister, Manipur.”
Around 50,650 men, women and children of different communities have been displaced in the violence and are now sheltered in 350 camps, set up in schools, government buildings and auditoriums. Around 12,000 people have taken shelter in Mizoram.
At least 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence between the Meitei and Koki-Zo communities broke out in the state on May 3.
According to officials, slowly and gradually Manipur has been limping back to normalcy but few anti-social elements are trying to disturb the peace in the state.
On the other hand, security forces have taken slew of measures to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
