HYC raises concerns over local youths’ involvement in militant activities amid emergence of NLCN

Shillong, Aug 23: Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed deep concerns regarding the participation of local youths in militancy activities.

Responding to the emergence of the National Liberation Council of Nongkyndong (NLCN), a newly formed militant group, Roy Synrem, the General Secretary of HYC, said, “The growing frustration among our youth leads them down such paths.”

He highlighted the distressing impact of unemployment, which often drives young individuals to resort to extreme measures due to a lack of opportunities. He emphasized the pressing issue of unemployment, stressing that when young people find themselves unable to support their families due to joblessness, they become susceptible to engaging in illegal and undesirable activities.

The organization has called upon the government to take effective measures, urging authorities to formulate policies that foster job creation in both the public and private sectors.

Synrem further emphasized the need to provide educated youths with ample job prospects, thus preventing them from being swayed by negative influences that might lead them to join such organizations.

It is noteworthy that a minor, currently in 10th grade, has been apprehended in connection with the newly established NLCN. Allegedly, this juvenile holds the position of “Chairman” within the outfit.
