Imphal, May 16: The Kuki Inpi Tengnopal (KIT) and the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) on Thursday staged a massive rally from Tengnoupal St Peter’s Church to the DC office in protest against the government’s decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and construct border fencing between India and Myanmar.
After the rally, a public meeting was held at Tengnoupal Community Hall, where the leaders of the organization addressed the gathering.
The rally was also attended by leaders of the Tengnoupal district-based CSO, village chiefs, Tribes leaders, Church leaders, and students. An estimated 500 people participated in the rally.
Expressing its opposition to the move, Kuki Inpi said they were “never intended to be part of this boundary creation” and had never given consent or agreement on it.
The suspension of FMR along India-Myanmar has evoked sharp reactions from various tribal bodies and civil society organizations, who expressed apprehension that the move would further divide communities residing on both sides of the border.
