Imphal, July 10: In a startling development, cash amounting to over Rs. 1 crore has gone missing from an Axis Bank branch that reopened on Monday after being closed for two months, according to police sources.
The incident has raised concerns of a possible loot during the bank’s closure, which was attributed to ethnic violence in the region.
The bank branch, which had remained shut since May 4, resumed operations in Churachandpur earlier on Monday. However, upon reopening, staff members discovered the absence of cash worth one crore rupees, prompting them to immediately inform the police.
Investigations revealed that the front door lock of the bank remained intact, indicating that the perpetrator did not gain entry through the main entrance. Instead, a drilled hole was discovered on the rear side of the bank’s concrete building, leading investigators to believe it was the point of entry. The two-story building houses various shops, including an Airtel outlet.
At the time of writing this report, an official complaint was being filed.
Further details on the case are awaited.
