Imphal, Jan 2: Security forces are actively pursuing suspected Kuki militants responsible for attacking Manipur Police commandos on Saturday and Sunday, leaving five personnel seriously injured. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed concern over the incidents, announcing that a delegation would soon travel to Delhi to update central leaders on the state’s current situation.
A senior police official revealed that additional security forces had been deployed in Moreh and surrounding areas in the state’s Tengnoupal district, along the Myanmar border. Both state and central forces are conducting extensive combing operations to apprehend the suspected Kuki militants.
Five Manipur Police commandos—Diliangam Kamson, M. Priyokumar, N. Borjao, M. Sunil, and Ponkhalung—sustained injuries in clashes with suspected militants in Tengnoupal district. After receiving initial aid at the Assam Rifles camp in Moreh, they were transported to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal.
Numerous tribal organisations have alleged that attackers have burned down many houses belonging to Kuki-Zo tribals in Moreh since Saturday.
In a statement, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh remarked, “The recent unprecedented attacks against state forces pose a serious national security threat.” He emphasised the need for a robust and comprehensive approach by combined security forces to address elements attempting to destabilise Manipur.
Singh mentioned attending a high-level meeting with party leaders to discuss a stringent approach to counter these destabilising elements. He added that a delegation would soon visit Delhi to apprise central leaders of the situation.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of New Year 2024, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh extended their greetings to the people while appealing for collective efforts to restore peace. Governor Uikey acknowledged the challenging situation in Manipur due to an ongoing ethnic clash and urged resolution for peaceful coexistence.
The Chief Minister, in his New Year’s message, highlighted the eight-month-long ethnic violence disrupting peaceful coexistence among different communities. He urged collective efforts to overcome the challenges and rebuild Manipur for a harmonious future.
