Imphal, Dec 12: In a heartfelt tribute, the people of Manipur commemorated the indomitable spirit of women freedom fighters who played pivotal roles in the Nupi Lal (Women’s War) against colonial British actions in 1904 and 1939.
This significant day is observed as Nupi Lal Numit – Nupi (Women) Lal (War) Numit (Day), honoring the courage and resilience displayed by Manipuri women during these historical events.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh shared in a post on X, formerly Twitter, expressing, “Paid floral tributes and deepest respects to the Nupi Lan Statue at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex and attended the observation of Nupi Lan Numit, 2023 at G.P. Women’s College (Central Hall) today.”
Reflecting on the historical significance, he emphasized, “The revolt of Manipuri women during the 1st and 2nd Nupi Lan is a firm reminder of the strength and courage of Manipuri women. Historically & culturally, Manipuri women take a special place in various spheres of our civilization. They have been taking important roles in many issues concerning the people and on the forefront of various social movements of the state.”

Acknowledging the sacrifices of these women, Singh announced two initiatives undertaken by the state government in their honour. He announced that the road stretching from Pureiromba Khongnangkhong to Nityaipat Chuthek will now be named “Nupi Lan Road.” He said the decision is a tribute to the historical significance of Nupi Lan and a recognition of the enduring strength and resilience displayed by Manipuri women. He stressed that May Nupi Lan Road stand as a symbol of empowerment, commemorating the pivotal role played by women in shaping the history and identity of the state.
The other initiative is the launch of the “Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang” scheme. Through financial assistance and resources, the Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang scheme aims to empower women, fostering economic independence and contributing to their overall well-being. The scheme is designed to benefit approximately 4 lakh women in Manipur who are above the age of 40 years, providing them with crucial support for their diverse livelihood pursuits.
He also congratulated the women of Maram for opening of Ima Market. “Pleased to learn that the Northern Maram Women Organisation (NMWO), Women Market Shed at Maram Bazar is serving the purpose it was intended for in empowering local women to eke out their daily livelihood and improve their economy,” he said.

He said with this market shed, women vendors on the roadside will be eased out and well organised.
As per the requirement of the season, currently winter clothes are on sale at the market shed, entirely run by women.
