Imphal, Sept 18: Armed Mongbung Meitei villagers in Manipur successfully thwarted an attack on their village on Tuesday night after suspected militants attacked it with sophisticated arms.
Nobody was injured in the incident.
A police official in Imphal said the suspected militants opened fire on the village with their sophisticated weapons on Tuesday night, but the armed village volunteers took on the militants head on and opened retaliatory fire. Due to the resolute defence of the villagers, the militants had to flee with their lives.
After a short duration, a combined security force rushed to the area and launched a combing operation to nab the militants.
The village is in Manipur’s Jiribam district adjoining south Assam, which has a mixed population of different tribal and no-tribal groups.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been further tightened in several districts of the state after incidents of violence were reported between September 1 and 7. The violence left 20 people injured and claimed the lives of 12 others, which included two women.
After the violent incidents and students’ protests against the militant attacks, the Manipur government closed educational institutions across the state on September 6. However, after 11 days of closure, all schools, colleges and technical institutions were reopened across Manipur on Tuesday.
The police have urged villagers to assist the security forces to nab the militants operating in several parts of the state.
