Manipur violence: Fresh firing incident between security forces and armed men in Tengnoupal district

Must read

Imphal, Sep 8: A fresh incident of firing between security forces and armed men has been reported from the Pallel area of Manipur’s Tengnoupal district since Friday morning, officials said.

According to the officials, the fresh firing incident started in the valley at around 6 am and is still underway.

Meanwhile, no reports of injuries or casualties have been reported as of now, an official said.

The situation is being monitored by the security forces in the violence-hit Maniput.

This firing incident comes two days after thousands of protesters gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur district on Wednesday and tried to break through army barricades in an attempt to reach their deserted houses in Torbung.

Officials said that security forces from the RAF, the Assam Rifles, and the Manipur Police fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Also, a full curfew was imposed in all the five valley districts of Manipur a day before the protest as a preventive measure.

To date, more than 160 people have lost their lives and several hundred have been injured since the ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3. The violence broke out when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

It must be noted that Meiteis account for about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 percent and reside mostly in the hill district.
