Imphal, Feb 11: Senior BJP leader from Manipur Khemchand Singh on Monday said that state leaders would abide by whatever decision the party high command takes to resolve the leadership issue in the state.

To choose the successor of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh BJP’s North-East in-charge Sambit Patra held a closed-door meeting with Khemchand as well as with several party MLAs and leaders at a hotel in Imphal on Monday.

Speaking to media persons, Khemchand said that any decision taken by the high command, MLAs and leaders of BJP would accept it.

“Leadership issue would be resolved very soon then the main focus would be on how to restore lasting peace and normalcy in the state,” he further said.

Surprising everyone, N Biren Singh on Sunday resigned to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who requested him to continue as the caretaker Chief minister until alternative arrangements are made.

Khemchand has been critical of the Biren Singh-led government for quite some time for “improper dealing with the ethnic trouble in Manipur”.

On the other hand, the opposition Congress on Monday announced that they would oppose any move to promulgate President’s rule in Manipur.

Taking to X, Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh said: “For the people of Manipur, Congress party opposes any move to impose President’s Rule in Manipur now as well as the party also opposes any move to place Manipur Legislative Assembly under suspended animation now.”

Singh said Congress party wants a democratically elected popular government in Manipur in the larger interests of safeguarding democracy in the state.
