Shillong, July 30: A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, prompting a Pacific-wide tsunami warning and sparking panic across the region.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), destructive tsunami waves could hit parts of Russia and Japan within the next three hours. The earthquake, initially recorded as magnitude 8.0, was later revised to 8.8 following updated seismic readings.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 19.3 kilometers (12 miles) and was centred roughly 125 kilometers (80 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, near the Avacha Bay coastline.
Videos circulating on social media captured the terrifying moment the quake struck. Footage from inside residential buildings shows furniture shaking violently, with residents scrambling for safety. Multiple reports of structural damage have emerged from the region, though official assessments are still underway.
Authorities have placed coastal areas on high alert, with emergency services deployed and evacuation advisories issued in vulnerable zones.
