Shillong, April 28: Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD, Prestone Tynsong, has assured the repair of the dilapidated bridge at Mawlyndep, which connects Lad Umsaw to Mawmaram, within one month.
This assurance was conveyed by the President of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Drivers and Owners Association (MCTOA), Mosklandar Marngar, following a meeting with Tynsong on Monday.
Speaking to the media, Marngar explained that the restriction on trucks weighing over 9 tons from plying between Lad Umsaw and Mawmaram was due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge and the ongoing construction of the Shillong-Western Bypass road.

Marngar stated that the truck owners and drivers had expressed their difficulties in delivering goods to the public because of the restriction on truck movement. He added that the Deputy Chief Minister assured that the PWD department would not only repair the bridge but also construct a subway to facilitate truck movement.
“The Deputy Chief Minister assured us that within one month, the subway will be constructed, and the bridge at Mawlyndep will be repaired so that trucks carrying more than 9 tons can ply from Lad Umsaw to Mawmaram,” Marngar said.
In the meeting, the MCTOA also urged the state government to explore an alternative route for trucks while the PWD department carries out the necessary construction work on the subway and repairs the bridge.
“The Deputy Chief Minister informed us that he would convene a meeting with the SP of East Khasi Hills, SP (Traffic), and the Transport Department to discuss an alternative route, as hundreds of vehicles travel from Lad Umsaw to Mawmaram daily,” Marngar added.
