Meghalaya: 9-year-old drowns in Umtrew River in Byrnihat, body recovered

Shillong, June 21: In a tragic incident, a 9-yr-old boy died after he drowned in Umtrew River at the border village of Amtola under Sonapur Police Station in Assam, on Tuesday.

The incident is said to have occured at around 10 am.

The boy has been identified as Asabul Ali.

According to the eyewitnesse, the boy was playing with his sisters and some friends near the Umtrew River when suddenly he slipped and fell into the river.

The eyewitness also said that the fishermen, who were on the other side of the river, tried their best to save the boy. Following the incident, the boy’s younger sister informed her family about the incident, after which they immediately rushed to the spot but it was too late already.

After the incident, the locals contacted the Meghalaya police at Byrnihat Outpost.

However, the boy’s body was recovered at around 1 pm by the Rescue team of the Meghalaya and Assam Police.
