Meghalaya and Assam to hold border talks before end of May 2023

Shillong, May 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday informed that Assam and Meghalaya governments will be holding border talks in a couple of weeks.

Sangma said the government of Meghalaya has been in constant touch with its counterpart over the reports of tension prevailing in Khanduli village. He informed that the meeting with Assam govt will definitely be held before the end of this month.

“We have also decided together that a joint visit will be made to these sensitive zones to build up the confidence of the people and also to ask our respective district administrations, citizens and respective areas and officials concerned to refrain from any kind of action that could lead to a tense situation,” added Sangma.

It may be mentioned here that on May 11, 2023, the Jaintia and Karbi community got into a violence clash at Khanduli village along the inter-state border in West Jaintia Hills District. The clash broke out after the Dorbar Shnong of the Khanduli restricted Karbi people from passing through the village. This came after a group of Karbi people had allegedly threatened the villagers from going to their paddy fields. The clash also witnessed stone pelting, fights and setting ablaze of two huts. Atleast two people from Karbi Anglong had sustained injuries in the clash and were admitted to a hospital in Hojai for medical treatment.

During the incident, the official vehicle of the SP of West Jaintia Hills was also attacked by the angry mob with stones.
